Some stories are for kids. Some are for grown-ups. The Velveteen Rabbit is one of the rare ones that refuses to pick.
A toy rabbit wants to become “real.” Not bought, not new, but real, through being loved past the point of looking new. The Velveteen Rabbit, presented by Spotlight on Faith as a Spotlight Playhouse production, tells that story on stage at The Spotlight Playhouse, 214 Richmond Road in Berea, from September 11 through 13.
The hook is simple and the payoff is not. A child loves a toy until the toy becomes something more, and a worn-out Skin Horse, the oldest advice-giver in the nursery, insists that realness is exactly what happens when love outlasts appearance. That is a line a four-year-old and a grandparent hear as two different stories in the same room, and both of them are right.
Why an intergenerational cast changes the room
This production is built intergenerational on purpose. The casting puts younger and older performers side by side, so the stage looks like the audience’s own family dinner table. When a child and a grandparent share a scene about what it means to be real, the play stops being something performed at you and becomes something performed with you.
The source story has always carried that quiet weight. It is tender, it is family-friendly, and underneath the soft edges it is asking a grown-up question: what do we let make us real, and who do we let love us long enough for it to happen.
The practical part
Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The show runs about one hour, which makes it an easy first theater trip for the youngest in the family. Friday performances are Pay What You Can, meaning you name your own price at the box office. Unsold tickets open two hours before showtime, so a last-minute plan still works. Front-row seating is wheelchair accessible with companion space, and if you have special needs, the theater just asks that you let them know when you arrive.
